Making Links to Pages that aren't in a Site Menu

Many times in Joomla you might want to make a link to a page without having to have it in a navigation menu somewhere. Examples might include:

  • Forms
  • A Google AdWords landing page
  • A special offer in an off-line advert
What you have to undertsand is that in Joomla, a page can not exist unless there is a link in a menu to it somewhere. But, didn't we just say that we didn't want it linked on any navigation. Well, here is the trick, the menu that the link is in doesn't have to show on the site...

Do the following:
  1. Make a category for the pages (or they could all be static pages)
  2. Make a menu to "hold" the links to these pages. I made on called secretmenu. You can put them all on this one
  3. Make a static item called "The Secret Menu". It can be blank
  4. Publish the module that outputs the "secretmenu".
  5. Note the link to the "The Secret Menu" page.
  6. Set the secretmenu module to only show on "The Secret Menu" page
Now, Any time you need a link to pages/categories that don't have a link from the main menu, just make the link in the "secretmenu". Then go to that page you noted in 5 above and the link should be there. Just right-click and "copy link location" and you have your URL.

It's a good tip. However, I'm not so clear on "menu" that you're referring to because there's so many menus in Joomla. Could you be a bit more detailed in step-by-step?

You have to make a new one, call it "secretmenu" or somthing like that

I agree with deafbiz, it's a real and intresting tip. Joomla is the best.

Once you've created a new menu, how do you show it in the content area?

At 5:49 PM, Blogger Rayna said...

ok, so i followed all your steps but get lost at number 5. You say to "note the link to the "secret menu page""-- where do i go to note the link? where is this URL written.

At 7:07 PM, Blogger Rayna said...

OK, so i have created the a menu module called secretmenu. I have published it and have made a link to my "secret menu page" and have made several other secretmenu items (or links) to content items. I set the secretmenu module to only appear in my "secret menu page" . when i go to the "secret menu page" i do not see the menu. I have tried changing the menu's location on the page and I still do not see it.

Also-- it was very difficult to figure out how to get to my "secret menu page" from the front end when there is no visible menu from the front end site or any links in the main menu to this "secret menu page" Is there an easier way to get to this page than having to figure out how and where to paste the partial URL that is given in the "edit menu item" page????

very good idea. I had another way to do this, but found that in this way its easier.

this sure is A LOT of work to just create a simple link - someone should work on a plugin/component just for this issue.

splendid! I like this method. I usually use the add link feature in JCE that allows me to query through section category etc, but this way is click and done. Thank you.

I was recently given a coupon to unlimited downloads of Joomla Templates &

Ajax Producs for only $10. I was told that the coupon is valid until 10/12/07

and the purchase is a membership good for a year. The coupon is "Unlimited".

To redeem go to www.joomlacmssolutions.com and register for membership. When

you get to the shopping cart submit the coupon and pay only $10. Their

templates are really good and they launch one new template a month.

Hi,

I am facing a similar problem on my website www.organicfacts.net I have spent two full days trying to resolve this.

I want to display a few content pages in the menu only on select content pages (these are not static pages). I have elaborated this below.

I have a section "Health Benefits" with a category "Essential Oils" within this section. Within "Essential Oils" there are 42 content items - three examples are - "Marjoram Oil", "Lavandin Oil" and "Lemongrass Oil".

I added "Health Benefits" in the mainmenu, then "Essential Oils" in the mainmenu with Health Benefits as parent.

I then included a new menu "essentialoilsmenu" and added the above three content items through - Link - Content Item in the Content frame.

I then went to the module corresponding to essentialoilsmenu and set the pages / items to these three content items in the essentialoilsmenu and "Essential Oils" in the mainmenu.

When I click on Essential Oils (http://www.organicfacts.net/health-benefits/essential-oils/) I can see these three menu items. But when I click on any of them, I cant see them in the menu. The links to these three content items are
http://www.organicfacts.net/health-benefits/essential-oils/marjoram-essential-oil.html
http://www.organicfacts.net/health-benefits/essential-oils/lemongrass-essential-oil.html
http://www.organicfacts.net/health-benefits/essential-oils/lavandin-essential-oil.html

Also, I dont want to set the pages/items to All, because I dont want this menu to be displayed on all pages.

Do let me know if there is a solution to work on this. Any inputs would be of great help!

Thanks,
Kiran

Help! I'm trying to follow these steps, but I'm a beginner with Joomla and they are not explicit enough. I don't know what it means to publish the module that outputs the menu.

Even easier is to just place the menu link as a child of an unpublished menu item. Much simpler and easy for novices too.

Ill admit it took a but of fiddling, but its working now thanks to you.

1 Create menu
2 Create menu item pointing to the article you want to display
3 Now you have a screen where it shows the menu title/alias/link/etc. That link is the link you need to use for the link you are making. Have to copy the whole link, for some reason i had a hard time on that part and had to redo it a couple times.

Wow, yeah, that worked great! For those who couldn't find the article link, when I created the menu and linked to the article, the link appears as part of the "menu details" when you are creating the menu. Just copy it from there. You have to add your site name to the beginning when you paste it in your browser or use it in a mailing.

Thanks for a great tip!

Yeah, great tip, since being able to link to a web page is only the entire purpose of having a CMS. It's a wonder that Joomla restricts you from doing this, even this far into it's development cycle.

Good work Joomla developers, once again you've made it nearly impossible to understand your "logic". Seriously, Joomla is like a huge inside joke for it's own developers.
